50th Anniversary Walk: Blackhope Scar Circuit, 7th June 2026

A special celebration in the Moorfoot Hills

 

This year marks 50 years of our walking club, and we’re celebrating the way we know best — by heading for the hills. Whether you have been in the club for decades or are new to the club, you are welcome to join us. This walk will take us over the sweeping ridges of the Moorfoot Donalds, taking in Blackhope Scar, Bowbeat Hill, and Dundreich on a full, rewarding circuit.

We’ll follow the classic 17–18 km loop from Gladhouse Reservoir, climbing steadily onto the broad, open plateau. We will pass by the ruins or Hireandean Castle and will hopefully get some great views of the Pentlands, the Borders and Edinburgh along the way.

The full route will take about 6 hours. There is a height gain of 532 metres. It may be boggy and pathless in places.

Start Point: Informal parking area on the southwest side of Gladhouse Reservoir. We will coordinate transport to minimise the parking space required.

Booking space on a Day Walk or Weekend Meet​

 

Contact us via our site's Home page, Facebook page www.facebook.com/ForthValleyMountaineeringClub or visit us at our social evening at the Four Marys pub in Linlithgow on the first Tuesday of each month from around 7.30pm.

 

The Day Walks don't require formal bookings, but it is advised to contact the club to indicate interest and possible attendance. Weekend Meets require to be booked. If there are spaces, then one or more meets can be booked by payment for the spaces upfront to the meet secretary or on-line. Only when payment is received are spaces allocated by the meets secretary.

 

Allocation of spaces depends entirely on when the club receives the money or is notified by e-mail that an electronic bank payment has been made. Hut fees are non-returnable. In exceptional circumstances the chair may agree to the return of monies. If individuals cannot attend a meet that they have booked, they are expected to tell the meet secretary so that the space is made available for others.​
