Ten club members attended the weekend meet: RB, GB, TF, IH, MMcE, HP, SP, ARob, BR, CS.

Very high winds throughout the weekend were the major factor determining what hills we set out to climb, and whether or not a summit was possible.

Saturday, September 19th

  1. MMcE, GB, CS, TF, SP climbed Beinn na h-Eaglaise (Fiona/Graham)

This group walked from the hut, past the Torridon hotel, and headed up through the woods. The normal river crossing was not possible due to high water levels, so we ended up following the west side of the Allt Coire Roill to ~300 m altitude until a lower water level could be found. We cut almost due east up to the summit, stopping temporarily to let a thunderstorm pass through. Waterfalls on the hill were impressive, with the high winds causing the water to flow upwards and sideways. Patchy rain throughout the day, but a high cloud base allowed for good views. The river crossing on the return was about a foot higher, resulting in wet feet on the way down. Overall, a good and adventurous day out (~18 km, 1000 m total elevation gain).

Finally dry enough for TF's camera to emerge. Thanks to MMcE for documenting the earlier parts of the walk so well!

  1. BR, IH & HP made an attempt at Beinn Damh from the hut. They had spells of dry weather but sudden downpours with very heavy rain. They decided to turn back when all three of them got blown over at the same time on the NE ridge!

  1. MMcE, GB, CS, BR, IH (& TF, SP) - Meall a’ Ghiubhais (Corbett)

The group started from Loch Maree picnic area, where there is a well-maintained carpark. Up the mountain track to the high point, (TF & SP turned around here, sticking to the circular path). The other five turned steeply up the side of the hill (heading west). The cloud cleared to give good views, although the wind did not desist. MMcE saw a group of Ptarmigan on ascent. Return by mountain track to complete the circle.

Monday 21st & Tuesday 22nd September

On Monday, ARob made a second (successful) attempt at Corbett Beinn Dearg via Stuc Loch na Cabhaig. Not much in the way of views, however.

On Tuesday, he climbed Baosbheinn: another Corbett feather in his cap.
