Six members of the Club ventured into the Perthshire Hills near Kirriemuir with the objectives of climbing the Fiona, Cat Law and the slightly lower hill, Corwharn. Several red kites were flying around in the breeze to welcome us as we arrived at the start point in Glen Isla: The Gatehouse to Balintore Castle. Navigation was straightforward as the weather was clear and there were many paths marked out across the moorland.

The summit trig. point of Cat Law (671m) was rapidly gained.

We retreated to nearby stone shelters to escape a strengthening wind and take refreshment.
Having admired great views to Highland and Lowland, we moved on Northwest and startled a large herd of stags. They startled us as well but BR had the presence of mind to grab a photograph.

Shortly after, we reached the Heughs of Machirn. There was much speculation as to the meaning of Heughs. Google was consulted but didn’t help much. Our onward path, with much undulation, crossed the flank of Cormaud onto The Hill of Glendye. Then we topped Tarapetmile and dropped onto the long-grassed watershed between Glen Uig and Glen Quharity. Another wee break before ascending Corwharn via the very steep S.E. side of Cairn Corse. The cairn on Cornwharn (611m) is elegant but about 25m away from the measured summit across a fence.

A shower and strong wind stifled further debate on this so we quickly retraced our steps over Cairn Corse and took the long easy slopes down into Glen Quharity.

We rejoined tarmac for the last 4km of the walk, the sun came out, coats and gaiters were discarded and much interest was shown in Balintore Castle and its history as we passed beneath it.

The latest owner seems to be making good progress on rescuing from a near ruinous condition.
Elapsed time 6 hours, distance 19km, overall ascent 747m.
