This was a well-attended meet with ten members enjoying a mixture of conditions on the Munros and Corbetts around Braemar. We were staying at the Cairngorm Club's excellent Muir of Inverey cottage.
Saturday was a bit gloomy with low cloud and some rain showers lower down and soft hail on high. Two members had a rather long and tiring day tackling Ben Avon, not surprisingly the others were all fed and watered before the intrepid duo returned just after dark. They did, however, have the best of the weather and were treated to some fine views denied the others on lower hills. Also on the Saturday there were ascents of Culardoch and Creag an Dail Beag and the lonely Munro Carn Bhac. Three members stayed low for reasons of their own and enjoyed the scenery around Clais Fhearnaig and the River Dee.
Sunday was brighter, colder and windier and six of the ten members parked at Auchallater in Glen Clunie and climbed the Corbett Creag nan Gabhar. Three others opted for a walk up to Loch Callater lodge and bothy with one heading off for Glen Tanar.
The very welcome clear weather gave excellent views to the Mounth and Glenshee hills although the Ciarngorms were obscured by cloud. The clearance was short-lived though and there was a nasty half hour of hail/frozen rain on the descent.
All-in-all a fine weekend meet and now thoughts turn to April's trip to the Scottish Mountaineering Club's Raeburn Cottage near Dalwhinnie.
